Project 2: The Age of Vikings Booklet
Project Brief
I started off by trying out several typefaces for the body text and the headlines, along with a couple of page layout drafts. Some of these ended up in the final version of the print booklet.
I then proceeded to the contents of the booklet.

Reflection
For the assignment, I really strived to create an informative and visually-interesting booklet, one that has my own style and interpretations added to it. So I went with a scholarly, collaged design as evident in the book cover and spreads. I diligently etched out many images to achieve the look and feel I wanted for the spreads.
When I was working on each spread, it helped to focus on the overall flow/rhythm of the page elements (images, text, headline, etc.) and to create a contrast between those elements in certain aspects such as size and colour. Those points really helped me create some interesting spreads. The making of the booklet cover was also very fun for me. I really wanted to make something different for my booklet and felt that a collage cover would suit its aesthetic. I used images of the oceans that the Vikings sailed across in their conquests, to represent their seafaring ways.
I really wanted to make sure I applied the lessons and feedback I previously received into this assignment. So I was more mindful of my work in terms of communication, the design, and the reader’s eye movement across the pages. And I think I managed to achieve that balance.
During the presentation, I received some helpful comments and suggestions, small details that I had overlooked, such as the typeface point size. Another focus was on the book cover, because some felt that the essence of the book was lost in the process. I understand their opinion, and the fact that everyone has their own interpretation of the subject.
I’m quite satisfied with this one; I’m glad that I managed to include aspects of my personality into the book to create something that both the designer and reader will enjoy. And I’d definitely like to explore more dynamic layout designs in the future.
