Reflection

Experience:

This class has been a very productive one due to its structure. The lectures (as well as the little anecdotes in between) are very insightful; the open discussion sessions were generally quite lively and constructive. Of course, we gained a lot of knowledge about the advertising industry and the mechanisms behind it. And I particularly liked it whenever the lesson delved into social/ethical issues. But we also learnt how to give and receive comments/suggestions from our peers, something which I appreciate. This module also encouraged a sort of steadfastness and discipline in completing the assignments (and completing them well).

There were however, moments (weeks!) of slow progress and uncertainty that would gnaw away at my sanity. Safe to say, I did not enjoy that at all. In the end, submissions have been quite smooth, and I'm relieved that I managed to submit them all in due time.

Yeap I'd say we've come quite far!

Observation:

When I first found out that we would have to show and discuss our works every week, I felt quite VERY anxious. It was more of my fear of making mistakes (perfectionism, fear of rejection, take your pick!) and taking a long time to come to terms with it, rather than the refusing of comments/advice. I knew that the feedback was important, but I dreaded the fact that the process always made me super queasy. And I had to work against that for a whole semester. Even now, I still feel super anxious about open discussions, but I would also be lying if I say there wasn't any improvement, and that gives me hope.

I also noticed that the weekly self-evaluation on this blog helped me in being more mindful/aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I love to do a lot of self-reflection in my spare time (what a way to punish myself) so this aspect of the module was very self-indulgent for me hahha!

Findings:

This module has made me face a lot of my fears and come to terms with some hard truths. I don't mean to sound like a movie script but it's true that I've better grown into myself and improved as a designer. Like, you're being forced against your will encouraged to tackle your own shortcomings head on, and that acknowledgment really keeps you grounded/determined to improve! Or maybe I'm just kiasu!

My classmates each have their own strengths and it's a nice feeling to be able to learn from them! We've also grown closer as a class, because you tend to do that after spending every week dissecting and critiquing each other's work.

To conclude, it has been an interesting semester. I'm sure the potent mixture of learning, forum questions, sporadic laughter, stress, and tears has benefitted us greatly. Besides, it only gets worse from here on out hahha.
