Reflection

Experience:
This semester passed us by really quickly. We learnt about the history and process of printing, made our own Coptic stitch book, wrote and designed our own book, and delved into digital publishing, among others. The assignment briefs in this module definitely allowed a lot more freedom in terms of the content and visual style for our book. Our classes also became livelier with the addition of several new classmates joining us from the Diploma course. Although we weren't required to post weekly updates on our e-portfolio anymore, we were instead required to write our own weekly feedback/progress into the shared feedback Google Sheet document.

Observation:
Now that the class has grown in size, the dynamics in class has changed for the better, in which we get to see a greater variety of styles and approaches to the assignment brief. We've also had more opportunities to ask and give each other feedback on our assignments.

Admittedly, I struggled a little with the weekly feedbacks. Previously with the Advertising module, the lecturer would write each feedback himself as he is explaining it to us. And while I do understand that having us write our own feedbacks simply means us taking responsibility for our own progress, I struggled with remembering the exact feedbacks from the lecturer, and sometimes when I've missed the week's classes, I am unsure on whether to leave my feedback column empty. I had a particularly hard time when the lecturer told us to write our strengths and weaknesses to conclude the end of the module. Sure, I did my best not to brag or sugarcoat any details, but that's because I couldn't think of any other strengths of mine to write?

Unfortunately, I've noticed a sharp decline in self-confidence this semester. It has negatively affected my performance in class, and sometimes I am unable to deliver progress on time. Some of my lecturers have already taken notice and told me to control my negative thoughts. I feel guilty because it does sound easy, to just focus on finishing my work and learning from it, but I'm not doing much to stop those negative thoughts either.

Looking back at my writing from the previous semesters, I can't help but think lord I sure sounded chirpy back then..

Findings:
Fortunately, I've been able to practice giving and receiving feedback with my classmates this semester, as I'm learning to dissociate myself from my work. I think it helps that I'm slowly learning to trust my classmates with my mistakes, given that I've tried so hard for so long to not screw up in front of everyone. I suppose it's also very unfair and selfish of me to not want to share my progress with everyone, so that's something I have to change.

Everyone in class takes this module seriously, so we tend to lean on each other for support and help each other out when working on our Publishing 2 assignments. It's very encouraging to see everyone try their best, which in turn also inspires me to have more faith in myself.

This module has no doubt helped me improve my design sensibilities. I still have a lot to learn though; I still need to improve my technical skills, I still need to read more, but I think I can see myself making those small improvements.
